THE NATIONAL DESIGN GALLERY OPENS IN SAINT-ÉTIENNE A first for France, bringing greater visibility to Saint-Étienne, the country’s only UNESCO Creative City of Design. Its industrial heritage has long tied the city closely to craftsmanship and innovation — and to design too, through ESADSE and the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennale, founded more than twenty years ago. The opening last June of the Galerie nationale du design, within the Cité du design, marks a new milestone: the creation of a unique venue dedicated to public design collections. The Galerie nationale du design was established precisely to showcase these collections, as well as those of other public cultural institutions. Among them are the Centre Pompidou, the Cnap, the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design de Bordeaux, the Frac Grand Large – Hauts-de-France, as well as the Mobilier national, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée de la Ville de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. From the second half of the 20th century onwards, design gradually became more structured in France thanks to proactive policies of acquisition, public commissioning and conservation led by the French State and museums. The creation of a dedicated showcase for France’s national design heritage builds on this momentum. Le Seuil serves as a welcoming reception area, furnished by a selection of partner manufacturers and design publishers, including Ligne Roset, Moustache, Petite Friture, Knoll, Vitra, Source Edition and Sammode. Monocle Minute on Design Part of the furniture From the Archive: Tu-Tu Pouf, France In France, the concept of compact and easily assembled furniture was still almost unheard of and Mobilier National, a government institution that promotes French interior design, might have wanted to nudge its artisans in that direction. The winner was graphic designer and origami enthusiast Turenne Chevallereau, who invented a system of interlocking wooden furniture that could be put together without hardware. His side table could be turned into a seat simply by placing a cushion on top. Despite winning first prize, Chevallereau’s designs seem to have been too far ahead of their time as they remained prototypes. Last year the collection was finally reissued by Source Édition, a Parisian mother-and-daughter enterprise that collaborates with Mobilier National to revive designs from its archives. “We like versatile products,” says co-founder Isabelle de Ponfilly. “It feels like a design of our time.” All pieces are made in Europe and the collection’s name, Tu-Tu, is simply what Chevallereau’s heirs remember calling their grandfather. REISSUING: AN ART IN ITSELF BY PATRICIA PARQUET With Source Edition, Joséphine Bursacchi and Isabelle de Ponfilly are not indulging in nostalgia for the 1950s to the 1970s. Instead, they are bringing carefully chosen, desirable pieces by designers back into circulation — objects conceived to last and to be passed down from one generation to the next. IT ALL STARTED WITH A LAMP BY BEN SWILDENS Joséphine Bursacchi was looking for a Ben Swildens lamp for one of her clients, but finding one in good condition or at a reasonable price proved impossible. As the founder of Source Parisienne, an online gallery specialising in design from the 1950s to the 1970s, she turned to her mother, Isabelle de Ponfilly, a well-known figure in the design world and former President and CEO of Vitra France. Their conversation sparked the idea of creating a new design publishing house capable of bringing rare creations back to life. Launched in April 2025, Source Edition reissues furniture, lighting and accessories from the 1950s to the 1970s with one clear ambition: to revive beautiful, desirable pieces made to last. “We don’t want to be ‘collectible’,” says Isabelle de Ponfilly. Joséphine Bursacchi, meanwhile, champions objects “that don’t feel dated.” MOTHER & DAUGHTER The mother-and-daughter partnership is what makes the company unique. Joséphine selects the objects, colours and materials, and shapes the artistic direction. Isabelle examines every project from a technical and economic perspective. Their approach is clear: to select only designs that can still find their place in today’s interiors. The first reissues already reveal a strong identity, ranging from Claude Courtecuisse to Ben Swildens, André Monpoix to Turenne Chevallereau, and Giuseppe Rivadossi. They all express the same conviction: good design stands the test of time. “What we want is to share the pleasure of owning an object, living with it and passing it on,” says Isabelle de Ponfilly. It is their way of taking a stand against disposable design. “GOOD DESIGN STANDS THE TEST OF TIME.” At Source Edition, reissuing is also a matter of ethics. Original drawings are not redesigned to suit contemporary tastes; they are respected, carefully studied and approved together with the designers who are still alive or with their rights holders. Tracking down these heirs can sometimes become an investigation in itself, but it lies at the heart of the project, as does the payment of royalties on every sale. This commitment to authenticity does not rule out thoughtful updates: certain materials are adapted to improve durability without altering the spirit of the original pieces. Produced in France or Italy by European craftspeople, these reissues aim to combine authenticity, quality and accessibility. A young company with a wealth of experience behind it, Source Edition occupies a distinctive position in the design world: approaching every reissue as an act of transmission. Distinctive Seating BY EMMANUELLE MARY In recent years, the masters of design have placed both the pursuit of ultimate comfort and the use of cutting-edge technologies at the heart of their sofa and armchair creations. Without sacrificing the sensual appeal of enveloping volumes and pure, gentle lines, they are creating seating that is as visually striking as it is ergonomic. Armchairs, sofas and chaise longues are no longer content simply to occupy a space: they sculpt it and give it rhythm, adapting to every room and every use through ambitious modular systems. This underlying trend was once again in evidence at the Milan Furniture Fair last spring. By continually pushing the boundaries of ergonomics, sustainability and interactivity through the use of increasingly intelligent materials, designers and creators are transforming furniture into sculptural objects offering tailor-made comfort. Straight lines and sharp angles are giving way to curves and fluidity, revealing organically inspired silhouettes and generous volumes. Technology, meanwhile, is becoming structurally embedded at the very heart of comfort. It is giving rise to self-adjusting seat and backrest systems that closely follow the body’s movements and adapt to each individual’s physique, supported by innovative foams and technical textiles with an exceptionally refined feel. Brands are also increasingly favouring recyclable or bio-based materials, responding to growing demands for environmental responsibility. Finally, these generously proportioned pieces, designed to be admired from every angle, showcase beautifully crafted details: premium leathers, meticulously precise topstitching and more. Designed in 1967 by André Monpoix for the Atelier de Recherche et de Création (ARC), the “Dialogue” armchair, a pioneering model distinguished by its clean, understated lines, is now being reissued by Source Édition in partnership with the Mobilier National. From €2,950. Read the full article (PDF)
