A Legend of French Design

Claude Courtecuisse

Claude Courtecuisse, born in 1937, is an essential figure in French design, with a career spanning over six decades. Visionary and bold, he continuously explores forms, materials, and production methods to create elegant, accessible, and decidedly contemporary designs.

Pioneering Sustainable and Modern Creations

In 1967, Courtecuisse made a name for himself at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs at the Grand Palais, presenting a stand of cardboard furniture that was avant-garde in its sustainable approach and modern aesthetic. The following year, he designed the Mercurio chair, made from thermoformed plastic, a technical feat emblematic of the industrial design era. He also created the Apollo lounge chair, an innovative, comfortable piece that could be carried under the arm.

Notable Collaborations and Iconic Reissues

Throughout his career, Courtecuisse worked with renowned publishers such as Steiner, Ondulys, and Prisunic, contributing to the creation of iconic pieces. One of his major achievements was the reissue of the Apollo chair in the Prisunic collection by Monoprix in 2022, a tribute to his groundbreaking work.

A Diverse Artistic Practice

In addition to design, Courtecuisse is an accomplished artist, photographer, and sculptor. His works, often commissioned by the Ministry of Culture, are part of prestigious museum collections, including the Centre Georges-Pompidou, which dedicated a solo exhibition to him in 2007 titled Détours d’objets. He also played a key role in the creation of the FRAC Nord–Pas-de-Calais in 1982, highlighting his commitment to contemporary art.

An Interstellar Artist

Courtecuisse’s workshop is located at the Paris Observatory, underscoring his connection to astronomy and space. He notably created a project around Arago, with astronaut Thomas Pesquet participating from space, making Claude Courtecuisse an interstellar artist in his own right.
